This project was completed during my study abroad trip to Belfast, Northern Ireland in the Spring of 2020. We were given a design challenge of creating and prototyping a photographic magazine that covers a topic relative to Belfast. Many classmates opted to cover local coffee spots or fashion, but as a tourist and temporary resident in a new city, I chose to design mine around my personal experience. This magazine not only serves as marketing for local Cathedral Quarter landmarks and surrounding businesses, but also encourages visitors who appreciate history and architecture to learn and explore, and maybe even get lost.
Learning the layout of a city is daunting, especially when you are overseas. Living alone and internationally for the very first time requires you to be observant and aware of your surroundings. I lived and attended classes in Cathedral Quarter, a large region of Belfast that runs along the River Lagan. Much of my time was spent walking, whether to class, to buy groceries, grab coffee, or just to see the sights. Rather than relying on staring down at my phone and following walking directions to my destination, I took the time to look up and take in the shapes of the structures that lined the streets. I took a walk around the city with no destination, taking photographs of prominent details as I went. Later, I was able to create short articles to highlight lesser-known monuments and landmarks.
